A prussian Hussar

How did Prussian cavalry end up policing German workers? This documentary traces the militarization of order from 1871 to the 1912 Ruhr strike.

Their presence broke the strike without firing a shot. But this was not improvisation — it was the result of forty years of institutional design.

This documentary explores three interconnected elements:

• The role of cavalry in strike suppression
• The recurring labor crises that shaped Prussian policy
• The rise of the Gendarmerie as a militarized police force

From the unification of Germany in 1871 to the Ruhr crisis of 1912, Prussia deliberately blurred the line between soldier and policeman. The Gendarmerie — staffed by 87% former military NCOs, armed with military weapons, and commanded by district military officers — became the architecture of militarized order.
